Structural cracks are generally horizontal in nature. They crack for 2 main reasons. The first is the lack of vertical reinforcement steel bar that are now standard building code in houses today. Homes built in the 1960's and about mid way into the 1970's did not have any vertical rebar. The second main reason being Hydrostatic pressure and/or freeze thaw cycle of the soil.

A small step can even cause a large crack to a complete sheer a concrete wall. We recommend removing the concrete and replacing with a lighter option such as wood or composite steps.
